The baby industry is overwhelming.

Andy and I started making a list of what items we think we will need for the baby and to create registries. We had mixed feelings while going through the process. It was exciting imagining caring for the baby and talking out different scenarios. However, the amount of baby stuff is so overwhelming. The baby market is crazy!

Andy and I try to live relatively simply and consider the environment and other issues of sustainability when buying products, so it is difficult to think of buying numerous products that will only be used for a few months. Therefore, we are are focusing on just getting basic products for the baby and trying to get as many used items as possible. On the other hand, we both have very busy schedules so the convenience of many products is alluring.

After we settled on our list of items I was then overwhelmed by the variety within each type of product. There are hundreds of types of car seats, hundreds of different bottles, numerious types of cloth diapers, etc... I did research on certain products such as car seats and the benefits of buying organic cotton products versus conventional cotton. I'll probably do more research later, but I think I need a break from looking at all the baby item websites for a bit.

During my searches I came across this blog entry from a father commenting on ridiculous products for babies and thought it was funny:

(Note: Andy wants to get the vacuum/baby rider, the Thudguard, and public restroom baby keeper :P ) .

  1. I could not agree with you more! We have slowly been building our registry based upon what we're finding we may need, assessing our future and trying to keep it simple and safe at the same time. I think we're done - or should I say, I'm done. Have fun!

  2. That post you linked to is hilarious. I especially enjoyed the caption below the picture of the Zaky Pillow (the creepy hand pillows designed to hold the baby in place).

I'm glad you're finding a way to make your registry work for your lifestyle! Where are you registering? The last two showers I went to, the mamas registered at Amazon, which I thought was brilliant.
